She convinced me that she knew how to take care of people. 177 00:12:57,370 --> 00:13:02,990 She did tell me that her husband had died of cancer and that she was the 178 00:13:02,990 --> 00:13:05,930 caregiver of him until he died. 179 00:13:06,470 --> 00:13:08,610 She later told Mr. Raines Jr. 180 00:13:08,850 --> 00:13:11,890 that she had also helped her husband with her husband's business. 181 00:13:12,410 --> 00:13:16,310 and had done some bookkeeping for his auto business. 182 00:13:17,230 --> 00:13:20,010 But there's a slight problem with the story. 183 00:13:20,790 --> 00:13:24,830 All of the things that Rachel Lee told Ralph Raines Jr. 184 00:13:25,110 --> 00:13:26,950 about herself were lies. 185 00:13:27,510 --> 00:13:33,130 Blind to the truth, Raines asked Lee to take care of his dad the way she once 186 00:13:33,130 --> 00:13:35,110 took care of her dying husband. 187 00:13:35,510 --> 00:13:38,210 I asked Rachel, I said, well, would you like a job? 188 00:13:38,910 --> 00:13:41,710 And I was confident with her. 189 00:13:42,010 --> 00:13:45,250 My dad got along with her, and I thought everything was fine. 190 00:13:46,150 --> 00:13:51,770 In fact, Raines trusts Lee so much that he gives her another job as well. 191 00:13:52,310 --> 00:13:57,710 Because Rachel Lee had told Ralph Raines Jr. that she had previously served as a 192 00:13:57,710 --> 00:14:04,290 bookkeeper, this allowed her to justify her offer to assist with the books and 193 00:14:04,290 --> 00:14:05,350 records for the tree farm. 194 00:14:05,810 --> 00:14:08,950 To Jr., Lee seems like a godsend. 195 00:14:09,280 --> 00:14:14,740 and he happily gives her control of accounts belonging to him, his father, 196 00:14:14,740 --> 00:14:15,599 the farm. 197 00:14:15,600 --> 00:14:20,700 I had other things to do. I was doing mostly the hard, dirty work around the 198 00:14:20,700 --> 00:14:21,700 place. 199 00:14:21,960 --> 00:14:26,900 Out working amongst the trees, Raines performed zero oversight of his new 200 00:14:26,900 --> 00:14:27,900 bookkeeper. 201 00:14:29,040 --> 00:14:31,940 Putting a check in front of him and saying, Ralph, you need to sign this? 202 00:14:33,380 --> 00:14:36,780 He would not have questioned it. I'm not even sure he even would have looked at 203 00:14:36,780 --> 00:14:37,780 it. 204 00:14:38,560 --> 00:14:43,680 Raines agrees to pay Lee nearly $9 ,000 a month for her caregiving services. 205 00:14:44,060 --> 00:14:48,560 And sometimes she pays herself two or three times in a single month. 206 00:14:49,420 --> 00:14:53,220 Much of this is ostensibly for taking care of Junior's ailing father. 207 00:14:53,780 --> 00:14:56,280 But what kind of care is he getting? 208 00:15:01,140 --> 00:15:02,140 Ethel Kelly. 209 00:15:02,600 --> 00:15:08,460 A neighbor who once worked for Senior says she gets a firsthand look. 210 00:15:09,180 --> 00:15:14,420 Many times he would be dirty in dirty clothes, and he hadn't had a shower for, 211 00:15:14,540 --> 00:15:16,040 gosh, I don't know how long. 212 00:15:16,360 --> 00:15:17,880 It was disastrous. 213 00:15:18,800 --> 00:15:21,280 You know, he was not being taken care of. 214 00:15:22,120 --> 00:15:28,400 It's painful. It hurts to know that she treated my friend, you know, Ralph 215 00:15:28,400 --> 00:15:30,660 Senior, the way she did. And then Junior? 216 00:15:31,360 --> 00:15:32,860 The kindest man on earth? 217 00:15:33,380 --> 00:15:34,580 You don't do that. 218 00:15:35,460 --> 00:15:40,460 Later, Rachel Lee brings Senior to live with her at the home in Portland, 219 00:15:40,680 --> 00:15:42,680 purchased with Rain's family money. 220 00:15:43,100 --> 00:15:47,220 When he gets there, he lives in a bed in the hallway. 221 00:15:49,800 --> 00:15:55,420 Lee is a master of separating Junior and Senior from friends and family, and few 222 00:15:55,420 --> 00:15:58,640 people are able to ask, what's going on? 223 00:15:59,140 --> 00:16:00,140 My wife. 224 00:16:00,360 --> 00:16:05,500 call his cell number and leave a message, and he wasn't getting back to 225 00:16:05,820 --> 00:16:09,640 And later I found out the messages were being erased. 226 00:16:10,600 --> 00:16:14,120 With few people watching, Lee gets to business. 227 00:16:15,000 --> 00:16:16,000 Rain Sr. 228 00:16:16,260 --> 00:16:20,960 has more than $5 million in investment accounts he shares with his son. 229 00:16:21,300 --> 00:16:24,280 For years, he's left the money largely untouched. 230 00:16:24,480 --> 00:16:28,200 But with Lee calling the shots, that's about to change. 231 00:16:29,290 --> 00:16:31,170 Our understanding is that Ralph Raines Jr. 232 00:16:31,490 --> 00:16:37,790 was very frugal by his own account, preferred shopping at Walmart and at 233 00:16:37,790 --> 00:16:39,190 Goodwill than to other stores. 234 00:16:39,410 --> 00:16:45,150 There's no indication from his prior practice that he ever would have 235 00:16:45,150 --> 00:16:51,310 those accounts on his own. In 2007, Lee has Raines sell $300 ,000 in stock, 236 00:16:51,430 --> 00:16:55,350 and the proceeds land in Tree Farm bank accounts. 237 00:16:56,910 --> 00:17:01,210 After Senior's stroke, the farm accounts were controlled fully by Rachel Lee. 238 00:17:02,430 --> 00:17:07,490 By the time she took control of the accounts, which we believe was about 239 00:17:08,410 --> 00:17:09,450 Ralph Raines Jr. 240 00:17:09,790 --> 00:17:11,410 trusted her completely. 241 00:17:11,869 --> 00:17:17,250 With Raines blindly signing checks, Lee parcels out most of the money she's 242 00:17:17,250 --> 00:17:20,050 stealing to herself and her relatives. 243 00:17:22,130 --> 00:17:23,829 Next on American Greed. 244 00:17:24,430 --> 00:17:30,410 The fortune teller plays matchmaker. The child is conceived in green. 245 00:17:32,090 --> 00:17:33,010 After 246 00:17:33,010 --> 00:17:47,650 three 247 00:17:47,650 --> 00:17:53,230 years of friendship, Rachel Lee is familiar with Ralph Reign's deepest 248 00:17:53,950 --> 00:17:55,410 Down to the last detail. 249 00:17:55,850 --> 00:17:56,850 Ralph Reigns Jr. 250 00:17:56,990 --> 00:18:02,110 shared with Rachel Lee what his image was of the ideal woman that he was 251 00:18:02,110 --> 00:18:03,110 attracted to. 252 00:18:05,830 --> 00:18:12,190 He preferred women who were blonde and light -skinned, and he was interested in 253 00:18:12,190 --> 00:18:15,910 people who were exotic and not from this area. 254 00:18:17,930 --> 00:18:23,030 Reigns' fantasy gives his psychic friend an opportunity to set the hook even 255 00:18:23,030 --> 00:18:29,250 deeper. In October 2007, Reigns is waiting for Lee at the Portland airport 256 00:18:29,370 --> 00:18:33,930 seemingly from out of the blue, a mysterious young woman approaches. 257 00:18:35,070 --> 00:18:40,770 She was tall, slender, blonde, British accent. 258 00:18:41,390 --> 00:18:44,990 The woman introduces herself as Mary Marks. 259 00:18:45,210 --> 00:18:48,370 and seems to have a paranormal gift. 260 00:18:48,850 --> 00:18:52,190 From his perspective, it was a chance meeting. 261 00:18:53,010 --> 00:18:57,450 They got to talking, and she said, well, is your name Ralph? 262 00:18:58,130 --> 00:19:02,310 And he said, well, yeah. Well, he believes in psyches. 263 00:19:02,930 --> 00:19:07,190 And so he thought it was kind of a sign. 264 00:19:09,970 --> 00:19:13,330 Eventually, Mary tells Raines that she's British. 265 00:19:13,930 --> 00:19:17,510 living illegally in California, where she works in accounting. 266 00:19:18,590 --> 00:19:21,630 To Raines, it's like a dream come true. 267 00:19:23,390 --> 00:19:26,290 I'm beginning to think that it's happened. 268 00:19:28,870 --> 00:19:33,750 Yes, something has happened, but it's not what Raines thinks. 269 00:19:34,910 --> 00:19:37,770 Rachel Lee was in the business of committing fraud. 270 00:19:38,250 --> 00:19:42,450 Not only did she support her family with fraud, but she used all her family 271 00:19:42,450 --> 00:19:43,830 members in committing this fraud. 272 00:19:44,350 --> 00:19:48,710 The person he believes is Mary Marks is really, partially, one of Rachel Lee's 273 00:19:48,710 --> 00:19:52,230 daughters, who at the time, we believe, was approximately 17 years old. 274 00:19:55,370 --> 00:19:59,970 Raines, of course, has no idea that the woman he's falling for is wearing a wig, 275 00:20:00,110 --> 00:20:04,090 or that she's related to his best friend, Rachel. 276 00:20:05,740 --> 00:20:12,340 Neither Rachel nor her daughter tell him after the first meeting, in the years 277 00:20:12,340 --> 00:20:18,520 that follow, or even when Portia Lee slash Mary Marks comes to Raines with an 278 00:20:18,520 --> 00:20:19,520 idea. 279 00:20:19,700 --> 00:20:21,880 She proposed to me. 280 00:20:22,920 --> 00:20:27,900 She said, you know, I'd like to be your wife. 281 00:20:29,320 --> 00:20:34,460 I'd like to help you manage the business and you do the work on the place. I 282 00:20:34,460 --> 00:20:35,460 love it here. 283 00:20:37,510 --> 00:20:42,890 Karen Finnamore learns about her cousin's new British wife from a name 284 00:20:42,890 --> 00:20:43,890 high school reunion. 285 00:20:44,690 --> 00:20:48,010 When they got there, Ralph introduced her to me. 286 00:20:48,510 --> 00:20:53,430 And I said, I didn't know you were married. That's a heck of a way to find 287 00:20:53,750 --> 00:20:57,390 And he said, oh, it was a secret. We had to keep it a secret. 288 00:20:58,390 --> 00:21:00,510 Or she was going to be deported. 289 00:21:01,650 --> 00:21:06,770 Like much in this scam, the name Mary Marks is not chosen at random. 290 00:21:07,130 --> 00:21:11,190 Mary Marks is actually Rachel Lee's mother's name. 291 00:21:11,530 --> 00:21:16,730 They needed a real person behind the fake persona so they could open bank 292 00:21:16,730 --> 00:21:19,150 accounts and they could transfer properties. 293 00:21:20,030 --> 00:21:26,510 When Junior writes checks to Mary Marks, his wife, the actual Mary Marks can 294 00:21:26,510 --> 00:21:29,610 take them and deposit them into accounts she opens. 295 00:21:31,180 --> 00:21:37,380 What's more, Rain's wife is just one part of the fake family the Lees create 296 00:21:37,380 --> 00:21:38,380 him. 297 00:21:41,640 --> 00:21:47,980 Around 2008, 298 00:21:48,720 --> 00:21:54,260 Portia Lee, the young woman playing Mary Marks, becomes pregnant. But the father 299 00:21:54,260 --> 00:21:56,820 is not her beloved Ralph Raines Jr. 300 00:21:57,640 --> 00:22:02,820 Now the Lees need to convince Junior that he's the one who planted the seed. 301 00:22:05,800 --> 00:22:11,260 Rain's friend Ethel Kelly says it's a lie that could be nearly impossible to 302 00:22:11,260 --> 00:22:12,260 sell. 303 00:22:12,420 --> 00:22:16,820 Well, I think he just didn't want to push himself on anybody. 304 00:22:17,120 --> 00:22:20,420 So, you know, companionship was just fine. 305 00:22:21,200 --> 00:22:26,740 Because he was not interested in the physical as much as he is. 306 00:22:27,310 --> 00:22:29,150 Just having someone care about him. 307 00:22:30,370 --> 00:22:32,450 He's not that. He's a real gentleman. 308 00:22:35,550 --> 00:22:41,330 Desperate to fit this square peg into a round hole, Mary Marks comes to Raines 309 00:22:41,330 --> 00:22:42,330 with a request. 310 00:22:42,590 --> 00:22:43,730 Ralph Raines Jr. 311 00:22:44,010 --> 00:22:45,370 tells us that... 312 00:22:45,640 --> 00:22:50,900 Mary Marks asked him if he would father a child with her through in vitro 313 00:22:50,900 --> 00:22:56,580 fertilization. That Mary Marks and Rachel Lee provided Ralph Reams Jr. 314 00:22:56,900 --> 00:22:59,880 with a container for him to place his donation. 315 00:23:00,300 --> 00:23:06,000 That he then took that donation to the airport where he was instructed to meet 316 00:23:06,000 --> 00:23:11,580 Mary Marks. She told him that she was transporting that back to California 317 00:23:11,580 --> 00:23:14,300 she was going to go through a... 318 00:23:14,780 --> 00:23:16,780 process of in vitro fertilization. 319 00:23:17,620 --> 00:23:22,280 Rains is told the process works and that he will soon be a father. 320 00:23:23,480 --> 00:23:27,900 But when Portia Lee has her baby, the birth father takes it. 321 00:23:28,520 --> 00:23:33,860 She and Rachel now have no heir to give Rains, but that won't stop them. 322 00:23:35,100 --> 00:23:39,860 Another of Rachel Lee's children, Pebbles Lee, had a child at about the 323 00:23:39,860 --> 00:23:43,480 time that Portia Lee gave birth to her son. 324 00:23:44,240 --> 00:23:49,880 And so without Portia Lee's son to introduce to Ralph Reams Jr., Rachel Lee 325 00:23:49,880 --> 00:23:54,480 Pebbles Lee's son and introduced that son to Ralph Reams Jr. 326 00:23:55,880 --> 00:23:59,580 The child's name, Giorgio Armani. 327 00:24:00,180 --> 00:24:01,180 Giorgio. 328 00:24:04,300 --> 00:24:10,780 With Mary often gone, young Giorgio lives with his new nanny, Rachel Lee, 329 00:24:11,000 --> 00:24:12,400 at her home in Portland. 330 00:24:13,920 --> 00:24:16,880 Georgio, Georgio, tell your mom hello. 331 00:24:17,620 --> 00:24:19,500 Yeah, he's a little upset. 332 00:24:20,100 --> 00:24:21,520 Of course we have Rachel. 333 00:24:22,180 --> 00:24:25,560 From the outside looking in, it's an unbelievable story. 334 00:24:26,080 --> 00:24:31,340 But Lee has cast a spell over Junior with the fantasy life she's created. 335 00:24:33,640 --> 00:24:37,720 She gave him what he wanted most. 336 00:24:38,160 --> 00:24:42,280 He wanted to be loved. He wanted to be cared about. He wanted to have his own 337 00:24:42,280 --> 00:24:48,660 family.
